AMD Unveils New AI Chips in Bid To Disrupt NVIDIA’s Leadership

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) introduced its latest artificial intelligence processors and outlined a two-year strategy to develop AI chips in a bid to challenge industry leader NVIDIA. AMD CEO Lisa Su presented the MI325X accelerator, scheduled for availability in Q4 2024, at the Computex technology trade expo in Taipei.
Known for producing the CPUs that drive PCs and servers, AMD has gradually expanded its presence in the graphics processing units (GPUs) market, which NVIDIA leads. AMD has positioned itself strategically to compete in this lucrative market, even though NVIDIA holds an 80% market share in the AI chip industry.

AMD has also announced the forthcoming MI350 chip series, which is expected to be released in 2025 and features a new chip architecture. Compared to the existing MI300 series, AMD expects the MI350 to perform 35 times better in inference tasks involving computing generative AI responses. In addition, AMD debuted the MI400 series, which will be available in 2026 and has an architecture called “Next.”
This represents AMD’s ongoing efforts to expand its data center offerings and take advantage of the growing need for AI chips in data centers, cloud computing, and other applications. High-performance AI processors are anticipated to become increasingly in demand as AI is incorporated into more businesses.
