- Microsoft is removing Cortana, WordPad, and the Tips app in the Windows 11 24H2 update.
- This move aims to streamline the user experience and prioritize features with higher usage rates.
In a move to streamline the Windows 11 experience, Microsoft is removing several applications with the upcoming 24H2 update. These applications include Cortana, the digital assistant being phased out in favor of the AI-powered Copilot; WordPad, a basic text editor with limited functionality; and the Tips app, which offered introductory guidance on using Windows features.
The removal of these applications follows a series of announcements from Microsoft throughout the past year.
In October, the company began removing the standalone Cortana app from preview builds. Similarly, September and November saw announcements regarding the deprecation of WordPad and the Tips app. Users upgrading to Windows 11 24H2 will find these applications automatically removed from their systems. This decision aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing strategy to remove features with low utilization rates and promote newer functionalities. The introduction of Copilot as a replacement for Cortana exemplifies this approach. Windows Insiders and commercial customers can now access the Windows 11 24H2 update through designated channels within the Windows Update settings or business-specific update services.

This streamlining effort follows a similar situation in 2017 when Microsoft announced plans to remove the classic Windows Paint application. However, due to significant user feedback, Microsoft reversed course and made Paint available through the Microsoft Store. It remains to be seen if Microsoft will consider similar user feedback regarding removing Cortana, WordPad, and the Tips app.
By removing these underutilized applications, Microsoft aims to provide a more focused and efficient Windows 11 experience, prioritizing features with higher usage and promoting newer functionalities. This update is now available for early adopters and business users, with a broader rollout expected in the coming months.
